Your dedicated Whisky Freaks team are not only in charge of selecting the whiskies, writing tasting notes and hosting virtual and face to face whisky classes, but are also the crew behind our educational content and blog posts. 

 

Greg Sanderson

 

Greg Sanderson is the co-owner and Managing Director of The Speakeasy Group’s portfolio of boutique hospitality venues and a former Australian Bartender of the Year. The Speakeasy Group are widely regarded in the industry as whisky specialists and its eight venues combined have more whisky on their shelves than any other group in Australia, including temple to all things whisky Boilermaker House in Melbourne.

Greg’s passion for whisky flourished when he lived and worked in Scotland for two years, visiting numerous distilleries along the way. Upon his return to Australia, Greg worked as a Brand Ambassador for Diageo’s Classic Malt range which included his favourite Scottish distillery Lagavulin. During his time as Whisky Ambassador, Greg travelled Australia hosting whisky masterclasses and tasting events.

For Greg it’s all about sharing his passion for whisky as far and wide and with as many awesome people as he can.

 

Sven Almenning

 

Sven Almenning is the founder of The Speakeasy Group, the largest buyer of premium Single Malt Whisky in Australia. Sven is also the founder of Ananas, an innovative online training platform designed specifically for the bar and restaurant industries.

A self-proclaimed whisky nerd, Sven has consulted to a number of whisky brands over the years including Johnnie Walker, Talisker, Singleton, Glenlivet and Chivas Regal to mention a few. He is also a proud member of Keepers of the Quaich, an invitation only international society that recognises those that have shown an outstanding commitment to the Scotch Whisky industry.

 

Alex Woodmass 

 

 

A relative newcomer to the Australian Whisky Scene. Hailing from 'Wine Country' New Zealand Alex grew up working in breweries, and cut his teeth early in the world of hospitality, from running cocktail bars and catering high volume events, to spending the required 2 years in the UK running traditional English pubs and learning how to pair rare whiskies, fine cognacs and luxury cigars at 5 star London Cigar lounges, and finally 2IC at the legendary Eau De Vie Melbourne

It was here he began running Whisky Masterclass and educating others to further the love of Whisky. This led to Alex taking the coveted position of Head of Whisky for the Speakeasy Group alongside heading up Whisky Freaks.
